Here is an excerpt from David Lynch's new book "Catching the Big Fish":
"When I started meditating, I was filled with anxieties and fear. I felt a sense of depression and anger.
I often took out this anger on my first wife. After had been meditating for about two wekks, she came to me and said "What's going on?" I was quiet for a moment. But finally I said "What do you mean?" And she said. "This anger, where did it go?" And I hadn't even realized it lifted
I call that anger and depression the Suffocating Rubber Clown Suite of Negativity. It's suffocating, and that rubber stinks.... (p.7)
I heard David Lynch talking about this book on the CBC. He was talking about his foundation that aims to teach one million children to meditate. His voice had the same naughty enthusiasm of Dr. Evil when he demands one million dollars in order to not destroy the world. But there was no evil intent in David Lynch's voice. I bought the book because I thought "he is so excited about this - it must be good". I like it. It's easier to relate to the experience of being freed from the confines of a rubber clown suit than the experience of floating above the earth in a ball of golden light or a waterfall of compassion - like they often tell you to imagine in yoga class. Actually I've never been in a rubber clown suit, but I have been in a wet suit and it feels good to get out of them... especially if you peed, which you probably did. What I also think of is taking off one of those politican masks that are around at Halloween. The ones that smell really sickly sweet. I think they are made of latex. So for me it would be like the Suffocating Latex Stephen Harper Mask of Negativity that I try to escape, through my erratic, non-commital meditation practice. I imagine it would feel good to get rid of that one.
